The Top 20 Social Bookmark Sites (according to ebizmba…)
ebizmba.com just published their list of the Top 20 Social Bookmark sites. I’ve copied their list here along with my commentary, results, insight, or complete lack of insight beside each service.
But first, two quick thoughts:
1. Twitter isn’t a social bookmark site. It’s a micro-blog. I don’t think it belongs on the list at all.
2. Just because a site is in the top 20, doesn’t mean you should be using it for your purposes. For example, Digg has a totally different audience than Stumbleupon. So just because a site is ranked higher on the list than another, doesn’t mean it’s the best for you. Take a quick look at each one to see what type of Tribe they have before you dive in.
Beside each one I’ll give you my two bits worth:
1. Twitter. As I mentioned, not a bookmark site. But I use Twitter daily and think it’s an important part of any marketing strategy.
2. Digg. I have an account, but I don’t use Digg very much. Not the right Tribe for what I do.
3. Reddit. Don’t use it, but will be doing more research on this one, I may do more with it in the future.
4. Stumbleupon Recently started using this site much more often. Great natural traffic results. I’m not just as a marketing and free traffic tool, but for it’s actual use (gasp!)- bookmarking things I want to remember! Click on the hyperlink to follow me, and I’ll follow you back. We can share links! (See analysis of my Stumbleupon Traffic at the bottom of this post)
5. Yahoo! Buzz. I don’t use it, but if you have some really exceptional content it’s worth a try. Your stuff has to be GOOD to get attention. National news, celebrity gossip etc. is most likely to compete in this space.
6. Delicious Daily use. Love it. Natural traffic machine. I have hundreds of cool things bookmarked. Click on the link to see my profile, and again, follow me, I’ll follow you, it’s a beautiful, sharing kind of a thing.
7. Tweetmeme. Installed on my blog, appears on every post. If you have a blog, this is a must have plugin. If you don’t have a blog- what in the world are you thinking?!
8. Mixx. I know nothing.
9. FARK. Ditto.
10. Slashdot. Need to research.
11. Friendfeed Have an account, set up automation, most of my social stuff is pulled in here, I don’t even have to think about it. No reason for you to not have an account. With a total of about an hours work in the last 2 years, I have 1,126 subscribers, all on autopilot. Click on the hyperlink to see what I’ve done with it.
12. Clipmarks. Know nothing.
13. Newsvine. Sounds newsy
14. Diigo. Know nothing.
15. Propeller. Got nothing again.
16. Mister-Wong. Really?
17. Dzone. Sounds like a rap group.
18. Blinklist. Sorry, nope.
19. Faves. Need to research
20 Twine. ditto.
So there you have it, the top 20 along with my commentary and or complete lack of knowledge. If you can provide any insight into any that I am sorely lacking in, please leave a comment for us!
Stumbleupon Analysis last 30 days:
Traffic. According to Google analytics, I have received 230 visitors to my websites from the 10 Stumbles I have done in the last 30 days. Not a lot of traffic, but hey, for pushing a button on my browser, why not? But, as is almost always the case, Google analytics under-counts. According to Stumbleupon’s own counter (I trust them to measure their own links better than Google can) I have had 440 visitors from those 10 Stumbles, so an average of 44 free visitors for every time I push the button.
