Social Marketing: “How to lose friends and irritate people”

I actively participate in 3 social marketing platforms. And I don’t claim to be a “guru” or anything, but I get business from every one of them every month. And I LIKE the social sites. It’s just plain old fun.

I have made lots of new friends, learned a lot of new marketing tricks… oh, and been SPAMMED LIKE CRAZY! Spam used to be an e-mail thing, now there’s a whole host of social marketing spammers who are just as annoying.

Imagine this: you’re at a party when a complete stranger walks in, waltzes right up to you and says, “Hi, I’m Bob! I have the perfect opportunity for YOU! It’s the hottest thing since 12 Daily Pro! You can make over $80,000 a month! Quick, let’s find a computer, you have to see this link RIGHT NOW!!!!!”

Even the most obnoxious marketer would never do that at a party, BUT THEY DO IT ONLINE EVERY DAY!

The rule is this: RELATIONSHIP FIRST. You have to build a relationship! And it won’t come from slamming your opportunity down peoples throats, either.

So next time you have a friend request, stop, take a deep breath, and before you slam that link down their throat just remind yourself that they are a REAL PERSON who deserves to be treated with as much respect online as you would give them offline.
