No business buys a solution for a problem they don’t have. And yet, most business to business marketers jump right into features and benefits, without taking the time to understand if the person on the other end of the conversation/call/letter…

How should I word an add trying to sell my problem horse?
I have a 7 year old POA gelding that I don’t have the experiance to work with. He has bucked me once giving me a major concushion and I need to sell him now! Help!

Just be honest say something like..
Beautiful 7 y/o POA-needs experienced rider. Then, when people call about your ad tell them you got hurt because a green horse and a green rider do not mix well, and you are looking for something a little gentler.

For Sale: 7 year old Gelding. Experienced riders only, and excellent quartering conditions required.

This will trigger a trainer to buy and shows you mean business. Ask top dollar and require an interview. Short sweet and simple will build curiousity.

Be right up-front, and make a joke.

    Something like this:
"He’s just as strong as he is pretty, and certainly too much for me to handle. He needs a strong, experienced rider…"

    or

"I bit off more than I could chew, but he’s just so sweet, I couldn’t resist. He’s not a beginner’s horse, but with training, his energy, and drive… "

Honesty is essential, you don’t want a beginner getting him:

"He’s smart, energetic, and NOT a beginner’s horse. If you want a good worker, and have horse experience…"

    Hope that helps.

    Have YOU tried training?
"Coming off" is to be expected, after all. Maybe some more time?

    Well, good luck anyway!

Just because he bucked you off once doesn’t mean he’s a ‘problem horse.’ Because you didn’t go into any kind of detail, I’m going to make the assumption that he bucked because of a disagreement between the two of you. There is nothing wrong with that, it happens all the time. Every horse person has gone through that at some point in time. If you really do have to sell the pony, you can either say what he needs or what he is. I cannot really help you with either, since we have no background information. So either he needs someone more secure in their ridingabilites, or he’s a relatively green pony. Be sure to double check the his new home, when he gets one.

    Good luck.

be as honest as you can be!!! that way a person or family that has no expierence wont call!!! you should definatly say for an expierenced rider, or get a second opinion from someone who is an expierenced rider. im sorry you were injured but maybe something didnt work wrong cue, lack of expierence (not trying to be rude or insulting) saddle not fitting properly theres lots of different reasons that could of caused him to buck you off!!! but like i said find out what his skill level is and then include that in your ad better to be honest than to sell him to someone else who cant handle him and they get hurt or he does!!! good luck!!!

have you considered a trainer fixing your horse? and a riding instructor fixing you?
Im not being a smart XXX saying that but sounds like a green horse that can be tuned up and a rider that with a little help could make a long term friend.
I know how it feels to get bucked and get hurt bad and I know the white knuckle feeling with one foot in the stirrup and a hand on the horn trying to build the courage to swing up there and drop your meat in the seat. A bad injury is a hard thing to mentally get past with a horse. but you might give it a go with some experienced supervision helping you.
If you just arent up to trusting the horse again, Be honest, tell potential buyers your selling him because he is just out of your skill range. Tell them you would like to break even on what you paid for him.
Asking top dollar now for a green horse isnt very wise because odds are it won’t sell. The horse market is in a rut at the moment and there are ALOT of cheap horses out there right now.
List a price that you think is fair but be prepared to negotiate.
BTW odds are your horse doesnt have any problems, he just needs some help and guidance.

I think it’s absolutely horrible you’re trying to get rid of this horse because he bucks. Take him to a proper trainer if you can’t do it yourself.

There is always a risk of injury when riding ANY horse. Don’t just sell this one, and then buy another.

As far as placing an add- it’s as simple as saying, "needs ADVANCED rider". Also, http://www.equine.com/ has a rating bar that goes from 1-10. One being bomb proof, and 10 being "hot" -completely hard to handle.

I agree with the rest of the lot in that you need a trainer. At 7 he is still relatively young and probably is just suffering from high spirits and lack of training. Why would you buy a horse though if you are not experienced to work with him? Make sure he is being worked 5 days a week (lounging counts if you are too scared to ride) and get someone to help you work through your issues. If you are going to always be scared of him then I think you should sell him. It is not fair to him that his owner hates him for just being a pony. Here is a possible listing.

7 y/o POA gelding. Lots of energy. Still green. Can w/t/c with experienced rider. Must sell so I can find a better horse for a beginner.

7 yr. POA gelding, lots of potential! Experienced rider necessary, lots of hind end push, shows potential for serious rider to go far in the jumping arena. Strong hind quarters would be make a suitable hunter/jumper, reining, or barrel racing. The sky is the limit with this powerful pony! Rider sadly does not have the time. Motivated seller.
