Please don’t spit on the wall

India has been fascinating in more ways than I could have imagined.Take for example this sign, posted in the stairwell of a mall. I had to do a double take. Could it be real? Why on earth would anybody spit on the wall of a shopping mall? I was so intrigued I had to take the picture, then ask my guide, Greeny (yes, that’s her actual name, not a nickname) what it was all about.

Well, she said, the actor is terrible. People here hate him. So they spit on his picture. That’s why they put up the sign to not spit on his picture.

Wow. I’ve never seen anything like it. But the fascinating part is this: If you put up something that people spit on, wouldn’t it be easier to take it down than to have a new sign made asking them not to spit on it?

I’m just askin.

Lesson, how many times do we create something that really isn’t serving us, but rather than just get rid of it we add a sign? As marketers, we do it all the time. Symbolically of course. But if something isn’t working, time to junk it, not add a sign.

To be frank Dave Sherwin that signs is not placed over there because people are spitting on the actor. May be Greeny joked about that, and it’s funny. People in general spit around in corners of malls and offices and it’s a common sight in India in public places. And I definitely agree with “to junk it, not add a sign.” When something is not working in point of marketers.

Although the post was quite funny i will agree that Greeny joked to you. But the lesson was well taken. Good way of applying the lessons in day to day life. Keep coming up with more of such lessons.

I agree with gutswe. Though spitting in malls would be too far-fetched an opinion. Government offices and public places do have this problem, but the malls are absolutely clean. As for the junk doing the rounds on the internet, everyone thinks its convenient to ask people to avoid it rather than removing it itself. Now this intrigues me. What good does it serve? Marketers still do it, maybe because its junk, but its still something to draw attention.

It has been a great deal of informative path for persons like myself to have a better knowledge on how to protect and prevent the public hygiene in various ways. Thanks for your information.

It’s an advertisement, and chances are someone paid for it to be there. As much as people spit on it, I’m sure they can’t just take it down, as it was already paid for.
Also, maybe most people hate the guy, but hey there might be some who don’t, and the advertisement will work on them.
That’s just my take on it. Removing it would be logical, however the world rarely operates on logic, so there we go.
