Want to make a bad impression in one easy step? Here’s a few suggestions:

1. Have a twitter profile that displays this: instead of a picture.

2. When somebody becomes friends with you in a social network, make sure the FIRST message you send them is something like this:

“BIGGEST LAUNCH IN HISTORY!!! THIS IS HOT HOT HOT!!! GRAB YOUR POSITION NOW!!!!!!!!!! JUST CLICK THIS LINK:

www.SPAM-THE-CRAP-OUT-OF-ME.com

3. As you fill out your profile, under interests, write something like this:

“I am a personal success mentor, and love helping people achieve financial success! I am the guru of guru’s, and would love to help YOU rise from the ranks of mediocrity. CLICK HERE to see my outstanding opportunity!”

4. Instead of inserting a picture of yourself in facebook, insert a picture of your super juice product.

Get the idea? For some reason we think this stuff will work. We forget that, as marketers, we think differently than most people. We push people away and annoy them, without even realizing we are acting like spammy morons.

Social Marketing is about relationships. We have to remember that they’re not called “Social Marketing Sites,” they’re just “Social Sites,” and they need to be treated that way! SOCIAL before MARKETING!

So next time you’re tempted to spam your newest friend with your link, maybe step back, take a deep breath, and actually treat them like a new FRIEND instead of a new PROSPECT, and believe it or not you’ll have more success than any social spammer.
