Google “Talks Sense” To Washington Spendaholics

Google has filed an official statement with the FCC about the Open Internet. As Washington becomes more and more out of touch with, and even hostile to entrepreneurs and business in general, Google is taking precautionary measures to try to ward off potential taxing and free speech infringements on the internet.

The document, while legal in nature, starts with a very friendly introduction:

“Our interest in this proceeding is straightforward: to keep the internet awesome for everybody. The Internet was designed to empower users. They are in control of the applications and content and services they use and create. And they- not network providers or anyone else- decide what ultimately succeeds in the online market.”

We’ll see how the FCC powers respond. Their MO so far has been to seize powers, not give them. Take, for example, their almost fanatical assault on talk radio, and their proposed solution, “The Fairness Doctrine,” that is possibly the most absurd and obvious assault on free speech in history. The market says, “If you don’t like what you hear on the radio, turn it off.” The government says, “If we don’t like you hear on the radio, we’ll turn it off, whether YOU like it or not.”

We’ll see how much influence Google can have on these nitwits.

Further in the document, Google states, “The Internet, accessible through our nation’s broadband infrastructure, is a unique and extraordinary source of economic, social and democratic benefits. At the same time, the openness at the very root of the Internet’s success increasingly is at risk today. These two fundamental facts together produce a compelling need for the FCC to act in this proceeding.”

Unfortunately, while every word in the doc is carefully crafted, it’s obvious that the major threat to the Open Internet is the FCC itself!

Back to the statement, “The internet has created unprecedented benefits and opportunity for every facet of our society. For this reason, the FCC must take the broadest view when assessing how the assurance of open broadband networks affects risks, investment and innovations associated with broadband infrastructure, and the overlay services, content and applications that ride upon it.”

And later:

“In brief, the open Internet drives overall investment and innovation in technology and in other sectors, maximizes free speech and civic participation, and engenders more sources to create the fastest and greatest innovations. As history teaches, innovation is more likely to spring from many sources than from one or few sources. Data also shows that open platforms such as the Internet create jobs and foster economic growth, with all sides benefiting materially from the resulting economic, social and free information flow benefits.”

But again, the problem we face is that we are dealing with a current regime that isn’t really interested in “maximizing free speech,” or allowing openness to foster economic growth. The recent history is that the government solution is THE solution: government is the answer, government is better than free enterprise, and free speech is only free if those speaking drink the same cool-aid as Washington bureaucrats.

The document itself is a refreshing statement of entrepreneurship, common sense, and success. If you are one of those people that is disgusted with Washington’s attacks on free speech and free enterprise, contact your senator and let them know that you support Google’s statement, and send them this link:

It doesn’t matter if you are a democrat, republican, libertarian or martian, if you care about Free Enterprise, and you care about Free Speech, I recommend that you take a stand and make sure your voice is heard in Washington, by contacting your Senator or Congressmen, letting them know you support the Open Internet.

And while you’re here, leave a comment! I’d love to hear what you think, good, bad.

    Dave,

While I support the spirit of your post, I think there’s two things to consider:

It doesn’t matter what ‘regime’ is in charge in Washington, government only knows how to do 3 things lately: expand their power, kill people overseas, and repeat the first two.

As for Google, I love them. I really do. And maybe they won’t jump into bed with world governments to perpetuate their dominance online, but I kinda doubt it.

As for free markets, I hear the Czech Republic is doing well right now. Maybe I’ll move there. The women sure are pretty, anyway. :)

It is important that the government is constantly told to allow people to have their freedom from government control, as long as they are not hurting anvone.

I beleive in free speach. I beleive a person has a right to say what they feel as long as the keep it clean. The biggest problem I have with the internet and I feel the Government should step into is all the crime on the internet. Let me give an example. Home bussinesses. About 93% or higher are scams. They are out there taken money from people by putting up bad websites. All the money that was taken when people thought they were helping on Katrina. The websites are allowed to stay on the internet. If loosing freedom of speech helps take that away. I am for it. The criminals should have not rights. If it is on the up and up I will help fight for freedom of speech, or anything that has to do with our rights as Americans.

Yes I can accept your post to a certain extent, and not all. This is because the present issues are really bugging the people who do believe in online sites. However, the post is informative.

It might be a noble deed to defend the freedom of the internet, but is anybody else worried Google is doing this? Google is damn powerful already, and what qualifies them to issue statements to the FCC?? Pernicious, much? We don’t need to be limiting liberty on the internet nor ensuring it, but we do need to be enforcing punishments on the pervasive disease that is internet crime.

Free speech is a fundamental right of all. The government can’t take it away unless it’s abused, and the bureaucratic nature of poking nose in cyber space as mentioned in the document stems from arrogance on the government’s part. The internet empowers me to find a job online and work from home, and long as I as a citizen remain confined within the legal framework, it is fine. The government should focus on cyber crime and pay attention to the more important areas rather than monitoring the freedom of well-meaning online workers.

  21. Marsha Vaz says:

I agree with your post and feel that the users on the internet should be given sufficient leverage to pursue whatever they want online having minimal or no government interferences. It is all good until the time something goes bad.
