Sorry, but I’m divorcing my Facebook Friends
I have been a big fan of Facebook for a long time. Even after they banned my first account (my fault!) I still loved them. But now there is another “Facebook Slap” that is going to shut down a LOT of users accounts, and I don’t want any part of it!
Facebook is big. REALLY big. To put it in perspective, they add as many users as Twitter has EVERY TEN DAYS. So if you thought Twitter was big…
But Facebook isn’t designed for marketers. At least, the personal profiles aren’t (more on that later).
Facebook absolutely does allow commercial use, but it has to be done the right way!
Facebook profiles are designed for REAL FRIENDS to communicate with each other. For small, tightly knit groups to be able to share, real time, their joys, sorrows, pictures, videos… and marketers have tried to twist and shape it to their own ends (myself inclouded!)
So when my niece shares her college experiences, they get lost in the clutter of my “marketing friends,” and I miss it. I can’t respond to all the e-mails I get.
Soooo, you’ll notice a change on my blog. You won’t be able to become my “friend” anymore, but you can definitely become a fan! And, if you are a marketer, I recommend you do exactly the same thing. Set up a Fan Page, and only “friend” your real friends!
Once you have made this change, you can market more professionally, and within the terms of service (always a good, long term strategy!)
So, if you are a customer, or a “marketing friend,” please unfriend me! I love you, I still want to work with you, but I’m going to use Facebook the way they want me to, and it will be better for me and my customers. I recommend you do the same thing! You can join my Page on the right- and get all the cool videos, up-dates, and cool marketing mojo you expect- and I won’t get banned from Facebook again!
