The “Cocky, Needy, Greedy” bit.

One of the greatest sermons I ever heard in network marketing was a speech by Craig Hepner, and during part of it he said, “Don’t be cocky, don’t be needy, and don’t be greedy.” Wow! That’s a whole speech in a single sentence. Maybe it just meant more to me because I have all three tendencies, cockiness, neediness, and greediness ;-)

It’s really great advice, because I’m sure all of us are prone to one, two, or all three of these at some time in our online network marketing career.

I was reminded of this little saying recently when I was getting ready to speak at a Saturday training event for a network marketing company in Salt Lake City. As I was waiting for my turn to present, sitting in the back of the room, I watched as this peacock, excuse me, this guy, walked to the front of the room. I say peacock because of his gaudy clothes. To help you get the visual, his overly colorful french cuff shirt was carefully pulled up to expose his “in your face” rolex. Not that I’m against nice clothes or watches, but it was unsubtle way of flaunting it that turned my stomach.

It was obvious from the start that he wasn’t well prepared. He talked like a Jim Rohn wannabe, giving a few well worn personal development stories, quotes, etc, then ended with a half hour version of the turkey story. You know, the one where one turkey teaches all the others how to fly, they have a great day of flying, then all walk home. I just told it in a sentence, he took 30 minutes. It was hard to watch.

The point being, this guy, who was obviously talented enough to make some good cash, was cocky. It ruined the whole presentation. As I looked around the room, I could sense the separation between him and his audience. They didn’t connect with him. He just came across as too cocky, he talked and acted like he was better than them.

On the needy side, I remember well when I started learning online network marketing. I signed up for a course that included a training back office along with weekly live coaching. I remember scrolling through the back office, and feeling totally overwhelmed. I had no idea how to do anything, I just wanted somebody to help me.

So I finally got some live time with one of the trainers, and I really thought they could help me. He asked me a few questions, I answered the best I could, and he then told me exactly which videos to watch and articles to read in the back office. I was ticked! I wanted HIM to help me! Ha ha! I look back now and feel like a moron.

He WAS helping me! It was exactly what I needed. But did I do it? No! I somehow thought that it would be better if he just… I don’t know, did it for me or something. I don’t know what I wanted. All I know is that when he pointed me in the right direction, by myself, I didn’t do it.

The reason was simple: I was needy. It took me many more months to develop the intestinal fortitude to become a student, and stop looking for others to do stuff for me.

On the greedy side, I think the main challenge we have is greed turning to impatience. We don’t give our efforts time to compound. We pull the plug too early. We want money, and we want it NOW, darnit! But online network marketing doesn’t work that way. Well, unfortunately it does for a few people, so we hope it will work as well, and as quickly for us. But it usually doesn’t. And those people that rocket to the top rarely tell the “story behind the story.”

So take it for what it’s worth, but these three words, Cocky, Needy, and Greedy are online network marketing killers. Stay humble, be a student, and be patient, and you’ll conquer these monsters and have great success.

You give some amazing visuals, that’s for sure! I can imagine exactly the kind of guy you are referring to… the peacock that is. I know of one turkey who I interact with every so often. However, he too doesn’t see how it turns people off, and how they will actually tune him out when he talks. Something to keep in mind…

  7. [...] As an online network marketer have you ever been cocky, needy, or greedy?  I think every network marketer has been guilty of all of these at one time or another (or will be).  Any one – cocky, needy, and greedy - will hold back your  network marketing success.  Take a look at this excellent but short article by Dave Sherwin- click here. Life-like advice for online marketing..I do agree being patient is the key. Reaping benefits before time is not possible, the anxiety can only affect workers adversely. Being cocky about performance or ability leads to downfall, and in many cases, downfall..for online marketing, you just need to stick your guts out for as long as possible, without complains..
