Top 5 Pay Per Click Marketing Mistakes

Pay Per Click Marketing (PPC) is a rush when it’s humming and making you cash, but it can also be a real bummer when it’s costing you a bunch of money and not generating leads or making you money. Here’s the top 5 mistakes people make, specifically in the biggest PPC platform, Google Adwords:

1. Choosing the wrong location. When setting up your campaign, only choose your own country if you’re selling a physical product, or the US if selling an electronic product. Trust me, selling to the whole world may sound great at first, but don’t add other countries until after you prove concept in the USA (or your own country)

2. Wrong “Networks and Devices” setting. The Google default setting is “All available sites.” It even says “Recommended for new advertisers” beside it! Wow! Until you understand this game, it’s hard to explain how damaging this advice is.

What you need to do is choose the “Let me choose…” option and select “Google Search.” Only after your campaign is profitable should you attempt the display network, and even then, only as a separate campaign.

3. Too Much Cost Per Click. Pay as little as possible at first. If Google recommends $2.50 per click, try $1.25. Start low and only raise it once you find profitable keyword and ad combinations.

4. Unfocused Adgroups. Each Adgroup should be tightly focused around specific keywords. Set up two ads for each adgroup and play a constant game of “beat the control.” Eliminate the losing Ad after about 30-100 clicks, then replace it with a new one.

5. Lack of attention. A great Pay Per Click campaign needs daily attention, not weekly or monthly! Check it every morning, and make corrections as needed.

Properly managed, a good PPC campaign is awesome. It can make money every single day, and once profitable can be cranked up to very high levels. But if mismanaged, it can be a waste of time and resources.

100 Articles In 100 Days Challenge

I’m taking EzineArticles.com challenge to write 100 articles in the next 100 days! This may seem like a Herculean feat, especially since I’ve been a member there for four years and only published a total of 66 articles, but I’m taking the challenge anyway.

Every decent marketing expert I know (the long term ones anyway) make article marketing a core part of their business. So this challenge is timely for me, I need to get to work and post more stuff!

If you’re trying to get exposure and traffic, this is a great place to start. It’s free, and if you’re passionate about what you do, it should be easy to create short articles about it!

Why You Should Join EVERY Social Media Site

The other day somebody in my Facebook universe asked, “How many social sites do you belong to?” Some people said 3, some said 5, some as many as 20… but I was the only one who said 126! And truth be known, I have more than that, but didn’t feel like counting.

If you’re totally overwhelmed by social media, you’re probably not interested in hearing that you need a ton of accounts. But here’s the good news- you don’t have to spend any time on more than a handful! But you better get them open.

Case in point: Friendfeed. I NEVER go to friendfeed. But I set up an account a couple of years ago, set it up to do what it does, and left it alone. Why? See for yourself:

Even though I don’t use Friendfeed, other people do. And by opening an account and letting it run, as you can see I have over a thousand subscribers who see every tweet, video, pic etc. that I post! The same thing has happened for me on many other social sites.

So although I don’t spend any time on most of these sites, I have a great following, links, and natural exposure just because I opened the account!

You can access the monster list of social sites free in our social marketing software tool, all of them are prioritized by category (social sites, bookmarking sites, video sites, article sites etc.) and all prioritized from most important at the top to least important at the bottom. Check it out, and start opening the accounts right away, because over time every single one of them can get you traffic, leads, and links!

A Great Question Based Phone Script

After 4 years of doing the Daegan Smith “never call a single lead” thing, I’m hitting the phones again! As much as I love automated signups (and will continue to build my core business that way) I’m starting a new team, and I not only want to hit it hard and fast, but set a good example for my new recruits, because very few of them will be able to get automated signups out of the gate. So I’m doing what they’ll be doing, buying 100 tour takers a month, with the goal of weeding through them quickly and recruiting 1-5 people per month, then creating duplication.

So, here’s the script I’m going to be using. Feel free to rob and duplicate it, but do me a favor and if you think you can improve it, drop your comments below! Would love to hear your feedback on this.

The purpose of this script is two fold: To sift through your leads to find the “A” players, and to get through your leads quickly. Most people spend too much time trying to build a relationship in this stage. Remember, your primary relationships are with your existing team, and most marketers spend way too much time doing what they think is “relationship building” with prospects, when in fact they are just wasting time. That’s why few people create true duplication. Too much time working with prospects, not enough time working with those that really deserve it (those that take action).

Of course, be friendly and realize this is the very beginning of a potential relationship with a team member, but you have to establish that they deserve to work with you before you invest serious time with them.

Also, keep in mind that even though it’s called a “script” it should be tailored to your own personality and speech. Keep the fundamentals of each question, but re-write it into your own lingo. Also, allow the conversation to flow. Don’t be so focused on the script that you don’t listen to what they’re telling you.

Write down the date, and answers to the questions in your contact manager, so that you can refer back to them later as you train them and help them develop their business plan to reach their goals.

Last thought, this is not a “sales” script. At no point should you fall into sales mode. Rely on the tools. If they want to see the comp plan, guide them to the online page where they can see it for themselves. If they want to learn more about the product, same thing. Let the tools do the work.

They must prove to you that they are worth your time to work with, not the other way around.

1. Hi, this is Dave Sherwin, you visited my _________ site (yesterday, this morning etc.) I’m just calling to follow up.

A. If they remember the site, move to next question.

B. What website? Clarify. If they still can’t remember, ask, “Are you looking for ways to make money online?” If no, hang up. If yes, proceed to question 2.

2. When you find the business you’re looking for, what is your financial goal? (establish their daily, weekly, or monthly goal)

3. How much time per day are you willing to work to accomplish your goal?

4. For how many months or years are you willing to work at it before you quit and move on to something else?

5. Are you willing to invest $150 a month for product and marketing expenses? (If the answer is no, wish them well and move on)

6. If I can show you how to make (answer from 2) in (answer from 4) months, are you ready to get started today?

If yes:

Great! Exactly what do you need to know to make your decision?
(provide answer(s) then sign them up!)

If no:

When will you be ready to start? (wait for answer)
If you think they have a legitimate reason for waiting, and they are an “A” prospect, make a note to call them back at that time. If they are a B or C player, say:

Sounds great! You’ll be receiving e-mail followups from me, that have my contact information, just give me a call when you’re ready!

The point of this script is to move quickly through your leads to weed out the many tire kickers and procrastinators. Follow up should only be done with serious people! They have to give you a VERY compelling reason to make additional phone calls!

Join My Pyramid Scheme! Just 9 Meetings A Month!

Wow. Somebody told me the other day their company’s “system” was the following:

-A local meeting every Wednesday night.
-A mandatory live training every Thursday night.
-A Saturday event once a month.

That’s a total of AT LEAST 9 meetings a month! That’s so 70′s! I can’t imagine taking two evenings a week away from my family to build my business. Not that sitting in a hotel meeting with a bunch of professional meeting attenders builds a business.

All I can say is hooray for the internet! Who needs meetings in a hotel when you can hold a meeting anytime, anywhere, and in any time zone! That’s the beauty of online network marketing. It’s a little scary for the old fashioned crew, but once you get it figured out you never go back.

Online Marketing Power Training

I have been watching Russell Brunson’s “20 Minute Payday” course videos, and I can’t recommend them highly enough.

This is one of the first guys to earn over $10,000,000 online, and in this video series he just starts at the beginning and gives a connect the dots methodology of how to make money.

Check out 20 Minute Payday here, and for the next month just watch one video every morning, and watch your business grow!

Your Computer Is NOT A Typewriter.

Bill Gates once estimated that people only used 5% of the software on their computer. I think that’s true. One day I was looking at my computer, and I thought to myself, “This thing is a cash register and I just haven’t learned to make it ching yet.”

I hope you’ve had the same thought. It’s not easy to learn, but once you get your computer to “Ching,” it’s a beautiful thing! What if everything you need to make money online is already on your computer or easily available online? The fact is, it probably is. Everything from your Twitter and Facebook accounts to those dusty money making e-books you bought then never looked at again.

I pulled one of those old e-books out two weeks ago, applied some of the things it taught, and made $250 from a few simple tricks, and will probably ramp that up to a great stream of income over the next few weeks. But it all starts with the mindset, you have to believe your computer is more than a type-writer or gaming device, and turn it into a cash register.

P.S. Here’s a visual demonstration of a lady who just doesn’t get the point:

“I just need 40 minutes of your time…” NOT!

Yesterday I was hit up to look at a new business (which I am about every day!) But this time the conversation went something like this:

Me: Sure, I’ll look at it, just send me your link.

Them: Oh, I like to do it the right way, when can we schedule 40 minutes, I would like to go over the site with you.

Me: Ouch! 40 minutes! I can’t tell you how much I DON’T want to spend 40 minutes looking at a home business. And, I can tell you right now, if I have to spend 40 minutes with every prospect I am definitely not interested!

I little bit of tough love, I know, but the whole point of online network marketing is to put your presentation online, so you can get automated signups and easy duplication. If I have to take 40 minutes every prospect, and I have to tell those I recruit to take 40, the duplication just isn’t there.

So, take a look at your current recruiting process, if you are serious about online network marketing, vs. the old fashioned belly to belly recruiting methods, you better make sure your site does the work! If not, you’re going to have a tough time recruiting pro’s.
